Today, Sunday, we left the coast and flew to Arequipa at 8,000 feet above sea level! And it only goes up from here! Upon landing at the Arequipa Airport we were greeted with the sight of Misti Volcano towering over the city at 19,100 feet! It is an active volcano that last erupted in 1985.
Arequipa is known as the White City and most of the buildings in the center are built from a white, volcanic stone called sillar. The architecture is breathtaking and the main square is more beautiful than Lima's. We visited the Jesuit Church and Cloisters and then the Convent of Santa Catalina. The Convent is a stunning study in color, with vibrant blues and reds.
In the evening we wandered around the square and the pedestrian area - magical!
